Greetings from the Chairman
Handel Festival Japan (HFJ) started back in 2003 and this will be our 4th festival. We, the HFJ committee would like to extend our sincere gratitude to your warm support and cooperation to date. In the HFJ 2006, you have the opportunity to enjoy two projects under the main subject called "DRAMATIST, HANDEL".
We can say HFJ 2005 was a turning point in the Festival history. This is because we launched our exclusive choir of "CANNONS CONCERT CHAMBER CHOIR (CCCC)" in addition to our exclusive chamber orchestra of "CANNONS CONCERT CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (CCCO)", which was established since the very 1st HFJ. The outline of HFJ is to introduce a wide range of Handel's works and in this regard, we are unable to slide over his oratorios – unity of solo and choir - in which Handel gave full scope to his originality. This is why the foundation of CCCC was mandatory in order to perform these oratorios. CCCC has been well received more than expected and its success certainly has encouraged HFJ to finally challenge to perform Handel's full oratorio HERCULES (Project 2).
The oratorio, more accurately, the musical drama, HERCULES is the spectacular as well as one of Handel's masterpiece, and it will be performed as the most direct realization of the main theme of HFJ 2006 – "DRAMATIST HANDEL". Please enjoy heated performance by full-filling soloists, Mr. Masato Makino, Ms. Mutsumi Hatano, Ms. Yukari Nonoshita, Mr. Yoshikazu Mela and Mr. Hirohisa Tsuji, together with CCCC and CCCO lead by Mr. Takashi Watanabe.
For Project 1, members of the CCCC and Mr. Hirohisa Tsuji will perform famous arias, ensembles and choruses from Handel's oratorios. The project aims to create an enjoyable and varied concert in contrast to the performance of HERCULES. We have no doubt that you would understand Handel's incisive dramaturgy is still living a furtive life in some of these programs.
For this brochure, HFJ has requested Ms. Annette Landgraf, a German researcher of Handel, to write an essay on Handel's dramaturgy. As an editor of Hallische Händel-Ausgabe, Ms. Landgraf has already edited ISRAEL IN EGYPT and is currently editing ARIODANTE. We would appreciate it if you could enjoy an interesting essay of Ms. Landgraf who holds much knowledge about Handel's dramaturgy, through a series of precise editing task of the Handel's works.
HFJ introduced "Handel Vocal Seminar" since March 2006, which provides us with opportunities to seek for Handel's fascination further, through practice with singers. In addition, since September 2006, HFJ started continuous concerts "Handel's Church Music" as a special project. This is a project to introduce Handel's church music centered on some anthems that are rarely performed in Japan.
As above, HFJ is going to do our best to keep introducing the various attractiveness of Handel's works from different directions. We would appreciate your continuous support and collaboration in years to come.
