Handel Festival Japan

In 2009 Kenneth Nott’s new edition of Handel’s last new oratorio Jephtha (HWV 70) appeared in the Hallische Händel-Ausgabe (HHA), the new complete edition of Handel’s works established by the International Handel Society (www.haendel.de). During the Halle Handel festival of 2011 the oratorio was performed for the first time after the new HHA volume.

The concert in Tokio as part of the Handel Festival Japan Vol. 13 is a similarly groundbreaking event because it will the first performance of Jephtha in Japan with the HHA score at hands.
Composing Jephtha in January and February 1751 the late Handel was confronted with the threat of losing his eye sight. Faced with his own fugacity the composer created a musical drama of greatest religious intensity with the tragic conflict of a father sacrificing the life of his daughter for his people’s salvation in its core. So in Jephtha we can experience Handel in one of his most intimate and severe pieces, struggling with the last things.

The International Handel Society warmly welcomes the efforts of Prof. Emeritus Toshiki Misawa and his musicians to make Handel’s masterpieces known to every interested person in Japan. I am sure that the performance of Jephtha and the lecture on Handel’s last years will form another milestone in the Japanese Handel Renaissance beyond Messiah.

国際ヘンデル協会(www.haendel.de）が編纂する新しいヘンデル作品全集、ハレ・ヘンデル全集（HHA）に、ヘンデル最後の新作オラトリオ《イェフタ》のケネス・ノット氏校訂による新版が収録されたのは2009年のことでした。そして本作品はHHAの新刊発行に続いて、2011年のハレ・ヘンデル音楽祭で世界初演されたのです。
　第13回ヘンデル・フェスティバル・ジャパンの一環として東京で開催される本演奏会もまた、新ヘンデル全集による総譜に基づく《イェフタ》の日本初演という画期的な出来事と言えるでしょう。

　《イェフタ》を作曲した1751年1～2月当時、晩年を迎えていたヘンデルは失明の恐怖と闘っていました。自らの死に直面した彼が生み出したのはこの上なく宗教性の強い音楽ドラマであり、その中核は、民衆を救済するために我が娘の命を犠牲にしなければならない父親の悲劇的な葛藤なのです。それゆえ私達は、最も深遠にして深刻な作品に位置づけられる《イェフタ》に身を浸すことで、人生最後の仕事に立ち向かうヘンデルの闘争を追体験することができるのです。

国際ヘンデル協会は、日本において関心ある全ての人々にヘンデルの傑作群を知らしめようと尽力されている三澤寿喜名誉教授並びに彼と志を共にする音楽家たちに対して深く敬意を表するものです。《イェフタ》の上演とヘンデルの晩年に関する講演会が、日本において《メサイア》に留まらぬ“ヘンデル・ルネサンス”の新たな金字塔となることを確信しております。
